A snappy website that sizzles and pops may please the senses of your employees, but will your target prospects and clients ever find your site and derive some benefit from their visit that leads to more business?
Search Engine Optimization (SEO) is both science and art. Top placement and relevance is a function of both content and design. Some things are obvious, yet often overlooked. Here's one:
If the search engines can't see your content, your site won't be indexed and listed.
Search engines see text, not graphics. If a blind person can navigate your site and find what they're looking for using a screen reader, then you are well on your way to having a website that can be found. Search engines are blind persons. Can't see graphics. Can't see nifty flash presentations. Can't find your links with flash-based navigation schemes. Where to start? I searched Google for my name "day tooley" and guess what? 817 hits. First one was at IPN.org (Internet Professionals Northwest). No surprise there. The developer who does the IPN site is Stanford Davis whose business is SEO consulting.
But Google the phrase "search engine optimization" and you'll get 33 million hits. It's a big deal. If you want to educate yourself a little, here are a few places to start:
- Yahoo Search Marketing
- Straight On Internet Consulting (Stanford Davis' company)
- Small Business Computing Channel at internet.com.
- Search Engine Watch (For you techies)

You can test your DSL connection speed a number of ways. See http://support.easystreet.com/speedtest.htm.
The Internet-based tests are the easiest and give acceptable results. CNET Bandwidth Meter is quick and reports the download speeds only. DSL Reports Tools > Speed Tests> will give you both download and upload speeds. Sometimes these sites are busy and you will need to try again.
I like the Speakeasy test since it is located in Seattle and likely is less affected by how busy the Internet is at the moment.
If your speed is not what you expected and you are an EasyStreet DSL customer, send an email to support@easystreet.com explaining your findings so they can see if there is a problem.

If you display an email address on a public website, email harvesters will soon grab it and add the email address to spam lists. To avoid this, there are several ways to “encrypt” the email address.
Since harvesters read the page source code and not the screen, the source code can be encrypted and still display the correct information on the screen, but the harvesters can’t see it.
Three methods are listed on this site:
http://www.webfooters.com/utilities/emailencoder.html
My preference is the second one. In four years of using it, not one of the published email addresses has received any spam (knock on wood).
If it’s too late to change your email, there are some things you can do to eliminate the spam. Here are some suggestions for you.
